Books and Articles

The Italians, Luigi Barzini. The classic introduction to Italy and the Italians.

Why You Need a Foreign Language, Edward Trimnell. This is a very readable and persuasive book regarding the benefits of learning another language, and very practical suggestions on how to go about it.

"The Older Language Learner" Mary Schleppegrell, www.ericdigests.org/pre-927/older.htm. This article lists some of the concerns an older learner may have, debunks a lot of worries, and has practical suggestions on how to deal with these concerns.

These two books are older, but I find they are an excellent introduction to the city.

The Companion Guide to Rome, Georgina Masson, William Collins Sons & Co.,Ltd, Glasgow 1985.

A Traveler in Rome, H.V. Morton, Dodd, Mead & Co., N.Y. 1961.

Good references in Italian

Roma, Touring Club Italiano, Enmegi Multimedia, Milano 2006.

I Segreti di Roma, Corrado Augias, Mondador, Milano 2006 (now available in English).

Websites for Language Learners Club 50+

Our Director thinks the semi-annual Club50+ program at Babilonia School in Taormina, www.Babilonia.it a very good buy. The activities include weekend visits to a number of sites in Sicily. She paid more than $3500 for a three-week Elderhostel program in Sicily which focused on cooking lessons located in a school in GiardiniNaxos, next door to Taormina. The Babilonia program includes many of the extra activities and day trips offered by Elderhostel, at a fraction of the cost.

Italy Tour First class private tours throughout Italy.
